Overview

Caustic ingestion is a high-risk emergency in otolaryngology and upper gastrointestinal care, because it can produce progressive chemical tissue necrosis in both the airway and the upper digestive tract. Safe management requires a time-sensitive, multidisciplinary approach involving Emergency Medicine, Anesthesia, ENT, Gastroenterology, General or Thoracic Surgery, Intensive Care, Toxicology, and, in intentional ingestions, Psychiatry.
