Post-Thyroid and Neck Surgery Bleeding

Overview

A practical, surgical, and airway-centered approach to post-thyroidectomy neck hematoma. This is not simply “bleeding after thyroid surgery”; it is an airway emergency until proven otherwise. The danger is not only the size of the swelling, but the speed of expansion inside a closed anterior neck space, with tracheal compression, venous congestion, laryngeal edema, and sudden airway collapse. The on-call goal is not to wait for imaging or a perfect operating-room setup. The goal is early recognition, immediate escalation, oxygenation, wound decompression when indicated, airway protection, and definitive return to theatre for hemostasis.
