Overview
A practical ENT-focused shift card for the patient presenting with anterior neck pain radiating to the jaw or ear, often with low-grade fever or transient thyrotoxic symptoms. The key on-call decision is not only “the thyroid is inflamed.” The real question is: is this non-suppurative subacute thyroiditis that can be treated with anti-inflammatory therapy and follow-up, or is this acute suppurative thyroiditis or a thyroid abscess requiring urgent imaging, IV antibiotics, aspiration, or surgical drainage?
